Retro-reflective Photoelectric Sensor

A retro-reflective sensor is a photoelectric sensor that uses the interruption of a reflected light beam to detect objects. They provide reliable, consistent object detection with no incorrect switching, regardless of the shape, surface, or position of the objects. The sensors do not need to be realigned if the object shape or position changes.

Retro-reflective sensors can be used to replace complicated, cost-intensive installations using several sensors in series.

See model selection chart below.

  • Photoelectric retro-reflective sensors
  • Type of light: Visible red light
  • Understanding detection principles:
    • Dual Lens - A lens body consisting of two lenses, a sender and a receiver, which are produced virtually in one piece.  In the dual lens system, the sent and received beams are physically separate and are positioned at a shallow angle to one another. The beams only overlap in a certain segment of the sensing range. At close range, there is a blind zone in which objects cannot be detected. So, when using sensors with dual lens optics, it is important to always maintain at least the minimum range.
    • Autocollimation - Autocollimation uses only one optical lens. The beam of light emitted by the sensor and the light beam reflected by the reflector lie on a single optical axis. The emitted light passes through a semi-transparent mirror before exiting the optical unit. After being reflected, the light beam is diverted to the receiver with the aid of the same mirror. Unlike dual lens sensors, autocollication sensors have no blind zone in front of the sensor.
  • Understanding switching modes:
    • Ligh switching - Sensor switches its output ON when the light beam is returned to the receiver.  If normally open operation is required, a light switching diffuse sensor can be used.
    • Dark switching - Sensor switches its output ON when the light beam is blocked from returning the beam to the receiver.  If normally open operation is required, a dark switching retro reflective or through beam sensor could be used.
    • Light/dark switching does both light and dark switching modes
